Praful Patel And the Art of Flying High

Amazing Ahmedabad
I am a Gujarati who lives  in Bombay and  travel to Surat and Ahemdabad several times for business. UpperCrust has really brought the destination alive. The stories throw a light on some unique aspects of the city that most people are clueless about. Reading the pieces on Ahmedabad, be it the one on the Egg Eatery to the ones on the illustrious families living there, were all  absolutely delightful. The stories revolving around the little places from Honest to the Havmor ice-cream to the famous Gordhan Maharaj has awakened the gourmand in me. You have explored Ahmedabad's history, food, art in an innovative manner. Keep up this pattern of bringing out the best of each Indian city in the subsequent issues as well.

Date Magic

I love dates. The article On A Date With Heaven was very informative and indeed interesting. From its origin
to conceptualization, to the varieties of date confectionery offered, the Bateel boutique is indeed charming. Bombay has a great market for gifting these unique ‘desserts’ and is becoming a prestige statement.

Congratulations to Farzana Contractor for not just winning the prestigous Giants award for journalism  but also for the photographs that enticed me enough to make a trip to the shop on my last visit to Bombay. Definitely a discovery worth making!

Scintillating Sushi
I am a Keralite from Cochin. I have a fetish for sea food, especially fish. Raw fish has always been looked down upon till the sushi craze came along. Reading Shernaaz Engineer’s feature on sushi and all that goes with it, through the eyes of some celebrities was educative. The various types of Japanese sushi, the culinary jargon involved including the etiquette of eating it have all been  definitely a purposeful read. I keep re-reading the article to remember what to order next time I visit a Japanese restaurant in Bangalore where my work often takes me.

Bon Vivant
I am a French expat working for a cosmetic firm in Bombay. I have been subscribing to the UpperCrust for two years now because I do believe that it highlights the best features of India and the world, depicting food, travel and people as well as culture in a beautiful way. The piece on Bordeaux wines was great even for an amateur like me. The visit to the wine valleys and the in-depth explanations was truly a rewarding read. The journey to the Chateaux and the history involved in wine making transpired well through the piece. Asit Chandmal is an acclaimed connoisseur in the field as well and reading about the experience of an expert only increased the curiosity value. I thoroughly enjoyed the article and learnt a great deal from it. Please keep writing more about wines, not necessarily from my country. It will help create more appreciation about wines.

A Dashing Minister
The cover story about the civil aviation minister, Praful Patel was endearing to read. His journey highlighted a difficult childhood, being the only son and losing a father at a young age, lent the perfect emotional quotient to the story. It was surprising to learn about the minister's favourite food and entertainment options as well, he is a simple man. The lighter side of serious leaders really gives an insight into their personality and life. UpperCrust has always explored everything and everyone in a different way bringing out the nuances that the magazine stands  for. Praful Patel is truly a go-getter and reading in-depth about him only made me realize that our Parliament has a member who exudes class, perfection and perseverance; traits that are otherwise hard to find.

Surprise! Surprise!
The latest issue of the UpperCrust was refreshing alright! The regular features were present but with a twist. Ahmedabad was a fabulous encyclopedia of food, culture and art for any new or old traveller to the delightful city of Gujarat. The story on sushi was funky and educative as was the mini-biography on our very own civil aviation minister. The feature on UpperCrust People was enticing and the section on wines was truly
informative. I have been reading your magazine for the past five years and it has only been getting better with every issue. Keep up the good work and consistency! Many thanks for rekindling the passion in the otherwise mundane life of many readers like me.

Delightful Vishalla
It was so endearing to learn about the philosophy of Ahmedabad's 28 year old open-air eatery. Organic food which has now become a fad,  has been explained in a simple manner.  Vishalla is a retreat of sorts and to read about food being served in ‘mud and leaf utensils’ made for one-time usage was heartening in the era where so much plastic is going around I am a big believer in naturopathy and fresh food. The story was gripping, a literary buffet of pure ingredients and food like never before. It made me want to visit the place then and there. If ever I go to Gujarat, I will certainly visit Vishalla.

Busybee Forever
I have always been an ardent admirer of Busybee's writings. I sincerely wait for the UpperCrust issues which have captured the elements of a good life so well. The editor, Farzana Contractor has been doing a marvelous job at exploring the culinary treasures of India and the world through this lifestyle magazine. The section called Busybee Forever is so good to read, it has the perfect element of humour. Being a follower of Behram Contractor's articles, it is always a pleasure to read his past work which is interwoven into the magazine   so well in each issue. There  can never be another Busybee. How about a book only on his food columns?

A Good Show!
I have been visiting the UpperCrust Show for three years now and it only gets better and more fun each year. This year was a mélange of regional food stalls, wine and cheese as well as chocolates and kitchen equipment. The Amitabh Bachchan inauguration was too good to be true. I attended all the workshops and demonstrations too. I especially enjoyed the Theobroma hazelnut demonstration, as well as Chhaya Momaya's grooming workshop. The UpperCrust team always encourages diversity within the field of food and travel. Keep up the good effort.

Keep It Up
I have been a regular visitor to the UpperCrust Show as I visit India around this time each year. I enjoyed the talks on the good life by Prahlad Kakkar (though he came tad late). The South African presentation was also good. The choice of exhibitors was wide ranging as well and I did end up buying a lot of knick-knacks for the house. The stalls of various desi foods downstairs were a treat alright. I do want to mention that the sugarcane juice stall was a real crowd puller and I thoroughly enjoyed myself with family and friends as we relived our younger days back in Bombay.
