Adding to the line-up of cool places for coffee and conversations is Nerlu Café, located in the heart of Bangalore city, solely created to promote and celebrate Indian coffee. The café is beautifully designed with a cool, modern European aesthetic.

It was set up by Shibani Murlidhar and Rajiv Majumdar with the main focus of providing a showcase for independent coffee roasters. According to them, there are over 200 such coffee roasters in India, many of whom are working hard to create unique coffees, using various processing methods and fermentations. A majority of them are restricted to selling online, and don’t have a physical space to showcase their coffees. Nerlu was created for these small and medium-sized roasteries, as a space for them to show off their products in a café environment, and to highlight their excellent coffees that often go unnoticed.

Nerlu’s unique ‘coffee discovery menu’ offers customers selections from an evolving list of 10 diverse coffees, that change every two weeks, assuring freshness and integrity of the roast. Highly specialised baristas then carefully brew three shortlisted coffees using a Hario Switch. The coffees are served in a bespoke tray, commissioned and designed especially for the café.

Once customers taste a coffee they like, the café puts them in touch with the roaster, enabling them to order the coffee directly from the source. Nerlu is a great place to easily discover your next ‘daily driver’.

In addition to the vast array of coffees on the menu, the café also has an in-house bakery and kitchen, and serves cakes, cookies, cheesecakes, quiches, sandwiches, crostinis, salads and soups.

The very name, Nerlu, meaning shade or shadow in Kannada, extends to both the fact that Arabica coffee is a shade-growing plant, and that the café hopes to be a canopy for the hundreds of Indian roasters that are doing incredible things with coffee. The café offers indoor and outdoor seating and is pet-friendly.
