If authentic home cooked Goan food is what you want, then Corinne's is the place.
She gave up her career at Air India, and decided to pursue her passion - cooking for friends and relatives. "We opened on Dassera, this year as it is an auspicious day and it rained which meant good luck," Corinne smiles. "Everything from the spices and masalas are ground fresh at home, with a grinding stone. I shop for my daily needs from the market to ensure that everything is fresh," she says.
She had earlier rented her place to a German tenant, but got it back to start her new venture. There is a little compound in front of the house, which has four rooms and a small bar. There is a patio, with a seating capacity for about 60 guests. The eatery is fenced by beautiful bougainvilleas. Corinne likes a homely atmosphere and personally receives her guests. The movers and shakers of Goa, frequent Corinne's for her delectable cuisine.
An elaborate feast was prepared for us and we set off on a gastronomical journey of Goa.
Authentic specialties made their way to our table. The sannas made with toddy went well with the spicy prawn balchao, spiked with curry leaves. The Mushroom Xacuti and the delicious dal fry with spinach had us licking our fingers. There was chicken cafreal, tender chicken pieces marinated in green chillies, coriander, garlic and lemon and tissarios, a dry preparation of clams cooked in shells with coconut and dry spices. The humble poi, a flat round whole meal bread, went with the pomfret rechado and served with brown rice, ideal for digestion and taste, we were told.
Corinne enlightened us about kismur, tiny dry prawns in a mixture of spices, garlic, vinegar and roasted onions. Simply out of this world.
We suggested she offer a tiffin service for her loyal patrons. She smiled in glee at the thought. "I have a lot of plans for this place. I've finally found what I enjoy doing the most," she professed with a sigh of contentment.
