It's Nostalgia All The Way
Margarida and Fernando’s baby, Nostalgia is nine years old. UPPERCRUST pays a tribute to the spirit of the chef who put his soul into the place.

You know a restaurant is good when the locals approve. With Nostalgia it's not just the Goans who swear by it but also tourists from other states, as well as  foreigners. A quick glance through the visitor book will tell you as much.

Chef Fernando had a dream when he put his vision of starting his very own restaurant. He wanted to prove that Goan cuisine was among the best. With fantastic experience under his chef's hat, he knew what he was about. With suitable support from his wife Margarida, he went on to fulfil his dream in January 2000 and subsequently achieved great success.

Here is a large, cheery place with an extensive menu which has almost 100 items to choose from. Dishes such as ox tongue, mussels panados, rissois de camarao, fish soimirem curry, pork roast, sucking cabidela, prawn almondegas, or fofos, which is fish cutlets mixed with mashed potatoes and spices, rolled in breadcrumbs and egg and then shallow fried. In addition to all the meat and seafood, there is also a fair amount on the menu for the vegetarian guest. Cabbage fugado, cucumber mergol, tendlim sukem, bendeamchi rosachi codi, chounli ros, moongancheo ganteo, alsande tondak, khatkatem…everything typically Goan, and all worth trying. As for dessert, the best bebinca in town is probably available here. Eat some and then carry a slab home!

The atmosphere really changes at dinner  when the local band livens up the evening and the true Goan spirit emerges. The huge bar gets very active and it seems like fun times will never end. Along with alcohol, happiness  flows.

Nostalgia, specializes as wedding caterers. You can order any Goan dish from among 200 they say can cook. They must be good at their job since they cater to about 40 weddings any given year.

Now, unfortunately for the sad part. Fernando is no more. We have the unhappy responsibilty of informing you he passed away between the time that UpperCrust went to check out his joyous restaurant  and this issue went to press. We were crestfallen when we received a phone call from one of Fernando's friends informing us about the misfortune.

But we have no hesitation in endorsing the fact that Chef Fernando has left his precious legacy in the very capable hands of his wife Maria Margarida De Noronha e Costa, who will no doubt do him proud.
