UPPERCRUST salutes Longuinhos, once known as Casa Portugal for being a consistently good restaurant for over five decades! Longuinhos in Margao is a landmark eatery. Everyone knows its location, for everyone has eaten there! Right opposite the Margao Municipal Council, the Camara, there's character and history to this restaurant. It opened 52 years ago when match-makers got the prospective brides and grooms to meet each other over tea at the restaurant, and when the happy union did take place in a civil marriage at the Camara, the couple and the merry band of people would walk across to Longuinhos and celebrate their wedding! "Remarkably, the tradition continues even today', says Ilio Coutinho. It was patriach Jose Pedro Longuino Almeida Couthino a gunner in the military during the World War II who saw potential in Casa Portugal which was up for grabs, bought it, changed its name and subsequently its fortunes, the fruits of which his extended family enjoys till today. Not that they don't work hard. Longuinhos as a brand has now grown into a large organization, with a Beach Resort in Colva, a canning factory, a cold storage, farming and husbandry, even real estate, but Longuinhos Bar and Restaurant continues to remain their flagship, it's now an institution.
