Gujarati Khatti Meethi Dal Recipe

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup toor dal

• 2 medium-sized tomatoes

• 1/4 cup raw peanuts

• 1 tsp chopped green chillies

• red chilli powder, as needed

• 1/2 tsp chopped ginger

• 5-6 curry leaves

• 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

• 1-1.5 tsbp sugar/powdered jaggery

• 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

• 1 lemon

• 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

• 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

• 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds

• 1.5 tbsp oil/ghee

• a big pinch of hing

• salt to taste

 

Method

Put the rinsed toor dal and one cup of water in a pressure cooker and cook for 3–4 whistles. Mash the dal, set aside.

Heat ghee in a vessel and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds and let them splutter.

When the seeds stop popping, add the ginger, green chillies, curry leaves and hing. Fry for a couple of seconds.

Then add the chopped tomatoes and peanuts and cook until tomatoes are soft.

Now add the cooked dal, turmeric, salt, red chilli powder, jaggery and approximately one cup of water. Combine well and let it cook on a low flame for 10 minutes.

The dal should be of pouring consistency. Remove from the flame and add the coriander leaves and lemon juice. Mix well and serve with rice or roti.
