Around Indore
♦Ujjain ♦Mandu ♦Maheshwar ♦Omkareshwar
Places to visit around Indore would include Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary, a scenic spot for a picnic at Patalpani Waterfall and another waterfall called Tincha Falls. But of course, Indore, itself dotted with temples, is also the base for famous holy visits to Ujjain
and Omkareshwar. As well as Mandu, with its famous Jahaz Mahal, a historic palace known for its architectural beauty. As
well as Maheshwar, sitting pretty on the Narmada River.”
Ujjain, 80 kms to the north of Indore is a significant pilgrimage city, known for its many temples, the most important being Mahakaleshwar Temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a highly revered site for Hindus.
Omkareshwar Temple, 80 kms to the south of Indore is also one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The island’s shape resembles the Om symbol, adding to its spiritual significance.
Maheshwar is a beautiful little town, old-world, with Ahilya Fort Heritage Hotel taking centre-stage. That’s where Team UpperCrust was headed. About 95 kms away, the drive there from Indore takes about one and a half hours through some rather interesting terrain, including the military cantonment district of MHOW. Passing through the Jam Gate, built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, in 1791, one enters the Malwa-Nimar region. En route we encountered a man sitting in the middle of nowhere, selling bananas. We learnt it was to feed the many monkeys in the region, a spiritual act of kindness. We also stumbled upon a cow sanctuary, gaushala which we stopped to explore. This is how it should be. Hundreds of happy cows there fed daily, housed in a large and clean area.
