Khan Market has acquired a bar and restaurant that is a civilized spot for a drink and conversation with friends. You don't have to raise your voice to be heard by your table-mates and you don't have to spend hours sitting on high bar-stools because here, the furniture is comfortable and the space is smart and well-designed. Like a private home, as a matter of fact. Wing chairs arranged in a corner with a pouffe by their side is not what you usually encounter in a restaurant, particularly in Khan Market where space is at a premium. There's mellow music for a mature audience and food that is from the Anglo-Indian community all over the country, but it is cooked to perfection, just as it would be in someone's house. We enjoyed Konkani Fried Chicken, devilled eggs that were straight from the British Raj as well as Chilli Fish and Lime Kedgeree. The last was the very epitome of breakfast of an Englishman in India, a century and a half ago.
The colourful Anglo-Indian community, their food and their sheer vibrancy has all but passed on into the pages of history books, if that. If we may say so, theirs is a culinary heritage that is worth reproducing in restaurant menus, rather than being ambitious, replicating South American and Japanese food, realizing that it has few takers and having to re-work menus in an operational restaurant. Kudos to the team that set up Anglow.
