Dishy Delhi: The Grammar Room
The Grammar Room
This is the 15th year of operation of the iconic Olive Bar and Kitchen that has just gone from strength to strength in that time. Unlike its branches in other cities, the Delhi outlet has the luxury of space, that too in an area that has been christened Style Mile, with top-end designer-wear, restaurants and art galleries in a single row. The other reason that Olive has remained young and fresh is the spaces that have come and gone in the same complex. Perpendicular to the restaurant, facing the green belt, is a single-storeyed structure with immense possibilities: the tops of trees as far as the eye can stretch is not a sight that Delhiites are privy to, very often! This is now the city's hautest work-space, breakfast venue, meeting joint and café, all rolled into one. The two young ladies who look after the brand (including marketing, food and service)– Vishwani and Tanya– say that there are three different sets of regulars, who use The Grammar Room in different ways.
First, there is the breakfast regular who demand the same Shrimp Benedict Brioche or the same Avocado Toast that they cannot seem to start their day without. Then, there is the "day" crowd who may or may not require lunch, but who will definitely order a beer, wine or a coffee-based beverage (the Mocha is infused with Callebaut chocolate!) and linger on for hours over work and/or meetings. Finally, there is the diner set who comes for the cosy comfort plus gourmet food that is a rare combination in our city. Our own favourite is the TGR Egg Fried Rice because nobody else does it as well in Delhi, but the Katsu Chicken Sandwich is their top-seller. This, mind you, in a one-page menu!
