When Yauatcha opened in the notoriously price-conscious city of Calcutta while many raved about the food and its London connection, there was a selection-snooty Calcutta-style Chinese-eating population that turned up its nose and said, "yes but is it worth it for a bowl of chowmein?" This Dim sum brunch must be their answer to that. For it is undoubtedly worth it.
The Weekend Supreme Brunch includes a selection of two Dim sums, two stir-fries and a choice of two from staples like rice noodles or baos and two desserts. Along with a choice of 30 ml premium liquor like Grey Goose vodka or Bombay Sapphire gin it makes for a more-than-filling meal for two.
For the Dim sums, the vegetarian one that is sure to convert even the most hardcore carnivore is the Truffle Edamame Dumpling. Fragrant with truffles that you can smell from a table away, it's the kind of order that is bound to make heads turn while your neighbouring diners discreetly ask the waiter, "what is it they are having?" Non-vegetarians can't go wrong with the Crispy Prawn Cheung Fun. Juicy fried tempura prawns encased in a silky steamed rice wrapper served with soy, it is so moreish that you are likely to repeat the order. If you’d rather try the Crispy Aromatic Duck – served like the classic Peking duck in tiny pancakes you would have to forego your second Dim sum option. But it serves four so it is not a choice you would regret.
From the stir-fries section, you can't go wrong with Braised Pork Belly — tender juicy pork belly in a sticky sauce. It's perfect when paired with a fluffy mantao bao. The Schezwan Mabo Tofu is a failsafe veg dish to try — always delicious and pairs with noodles or rice effortlessly. Crunchy and succulent, the Port Klang-style Chilli Prawns are a speciality inspired by the above mentioned Malaysian region and can be the perfect addition to the weekend indulgence.
Desserts will put you in a serious dilemma for it is hard to pick only two. Our favourites were Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse and the Chocolate Pebble.
