We’ve been considering the Vietnamese dining options, dedicatedly so, in our city and we’re coming up short. A place that has its pho down pat, serves satisfying banh mis and light rice paper rolls in an ambience that’s minus the frills. Now, here’s one: Nho Saigon – memories of Saigon, the former name of Vietnam’s capital city of Ho Chi Minh – Bombay’s first-of-its-kind, more so for the mead taproom attached to it. BKC just gets more alluring by the day.
Potion Ivy, Geisha, Nektar and Hoppysaurus are flowing at the meadery for the craft aficionados. Take your pick and order the pork salad with crispy pork belly in a Hondashi and jaggery vinaigrette, then lay back as the ceramic wall lamps and the noodle-shaped bar light fixture put you in a Vietnamese trance. The décor and the food are all inspired by the eateries of colonial times and local bars of the Southeast Asian nation, and those avocado & prawn rice rolls are on point. Cottage cheese is wok-tossed to much delight, with fretted mushrooms and street-style mince chicken is coal-charred and served on sugarcane sticks. Rice paper pizza is a favourite, with four options inclusive of Mock Meat & Tofu, with aioli. The Special OG Banh Mi and the Fishball Pho are authentically dished out, probably what you would return for.
Cocktails and mocktails, curries and stir-fries, rice and noodles are par for the course at Nho Saigon, and then there’s dessert! French Viet Layer Dessert with kaffir lime crème and toffee the traditional, juicy Sweet Corn Pudding are what you leave Nho Saigon happily with.
