IT took an enterprising foodie from Amritsar to come and introduce kebabs and tikkas to Visakhapatnam.
Sanjeev Khanna, the Amritsari, has no catering college background or experience in the restaurant business. What he had, however, was a fascination for Vizag. He just wanted to be in the city. He had been coming here for his holidays for at least 25 years. So, one day in 2002, he and wife Poonam just picked up their bags and shifted to Vizag.
Now the duo run the small popular eateries Fillers and Kebabri at Dutt Island, Siripuram junction, in Vizag. Fillers is the fast food joint, Kebabri just does kebabs.
Sanjeev runs the enterprise, but the cooking is done by Poonam. She, too, has no catering background. But she has the Amritsar touch, he explains. They start business in the evening because daytimes are too hot in Vizag. The eateries are al fresco, so there's no air-conditioning.
Both restaurants do a lot of home deliveries. Almost 70 per cent of the business is this. And Sanjeev Khanna delivers cross the entire city. You can get from one end to the other in seven minutes flat. So, we really serve fast food!
