Down in a valley, upon a hill.

It was a sight to behold. As I slowly took in the vast meadow in front of me and scanned the details of my natural surroundings, observing the harmonious colours all around, the sky, the mountains, the river, the flowers… the sounds,
the gentle fragrance, the soft breeze, my first thoughts were of God. How on earth, thought I, could one witness such glory and deny the existence of God. Not possible. God exists and you can meet Him any time you decide to visit
Valley of Flowers in the beautiful state of Uttaranchal. Our country is so rich in natural beauty, if only we would go discover it. Hope my account of it and the beautiful pictures inspire you to make a trip there.

An interesting sojourn that team UpperCrust made this quarter was to Baroda. Apart from some good food that we savoured there, some great recipes that we brought back for you and the wonderful people we met and interviewed, we discovered Champaner, an ancient city that was buried for thousands of years and is now in the process of being excavated and restored, thanks to the passion and interest of architect Karan Grover.

Baroda is truly a cosmopolitan city, with an unique
cultural mix, besides the influence of history. And the most spectacular royal palace of India is situated here. The Laxmi Vilas Palace, residence of Maharaja Ranjitsingh Gaekwad and Maharani Shubhanginiraje, where we were guests for dinner. Read on Page 76.

At the 3rd UpperCrust Show at the World Trade Centre in Bombay, there was much fun and gaiety as also a good turnover for the trade. The mood was set by Dr. Vijaypat Singhania, our chief guest who only a week before that had achieved a new world record in hot-air ballooning. And Salman Khan had a blast at the show, relishing all kinds of delicacies in the Courtyard. When he went around the 100 stalls checking out what was available, he caused a stampede! But he was charm personified. I was witness to the fact that he patiently signed for each person who sought his autograph — and there were far too many who did! Thank you Salman, very gracious of you.

It’s time to bid adieu to 2005. When I look back to see where it has gone, I am afraid I see just a blur, but then that seems to be the case each passing year. One goes faster than the other. Does that mean life is good? Who knows, none of us have the time to stop and think!

A happy and healthy New Year, anyway.
