Prakash Thadani, proprietor of Silkworks is passionate about all his creations.

Silkworks, Works Well!
A one-stop shop for your all gifting needs, be it birthday, wedding, anniversary, shower or whatever, Silkworks has it all. UpperCrust makes yet another delightful discovery.

Prakash Thadani is pretty well known on the Bombay social scene. A likeable sort of a person, there is a creative mind ticking inside that head of his. And it goes beyond Silkworks, which is a pretty place selling pretty things. Prakash is big in the world of jazz. He promotes live music, has his own rock and roll band and occasionally plays at Not Just Jazz By The Bay, Hard Rock Caf and Starters and More. But this is his passion, his livelihood lies in Silkworks.

Situated at the end of Worli Seaface, just at the mouth of the fishing village on the left, Silkworks houses very interesting bric a brac, knick knacks, tit bits. All country made, not imported from China, cheaply or otherwise.

It was Prakashs wife, Meenu who was in the business of garments for 30 years supplying her creations to upmarket stores in New York, Atlanta, Texas, San Fransisco who thought of diversifying into home products. Which is how Silkworks was born in 1988. The products came from their own workshop just outside Delhi. This helps greatly in quality control as well as being able to take unique custom orders. Silkworks is a one-stop shop for those planning a wedding. They take the burden off you, for the innumerable tiny little things that Indian weddings require.

So what do you find here? Brassware, iron figurines, metal artifacts for the outdoor, vases in many shades, hues and materials. Oil lamps, candles and plenty of soft furnishings like bed rests, neck pillows, knee rests and what not. Tastefully made, covered in silk. The whole store is like that. Artistic things, reasonably priced.

Interestingly, there is a bit of history attached to Silkworks. Originally it was the Thadani home. Way back in the early 50s, when Prakashs parents came from separated India, as they called it, and found this place they moved in, hoping one day it would again be united India and they might return to Pakistan. Nothing of the sort happened, instead more and more people were streaming into the country and Prakashs father found himself indulging in an act of charity: offering their home as a shelter to help those who were dislocated, homeless so as to say. Very noble! Perhaps which is what explains why Silkworks has a good feel to the place. Prayers of gratitude of distressed people has to work.
