Sorted. Delicatessen - The Healthy Way

Sorted. Delicatessen

The word “deli” conjures visions of “deli”ciousness, sandwiches, desserts, calories, fat and basically unhealthy indulgence. Sorted. Delicatessen disabuses this notion completely. Yes! You can order burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, yummy desserts and so much more here, but these will be grain-free and naturally sweetened.

In a world of fad diets and an almost constant weight-loss and fitness conscious shift in eating habits, this is definitely a deli that’s got the right ideology. Sorted. Delicatessen opened in Kalyani Nagar a few weeks ago, this is India’s first totally grain- free and naturally sweetened kitchen. They have a strict policy and are purists, so the kitchen has 100% no grain, no gluten, no wheat, no maida, no refined sugar, no corn and rice, no preservatives, no chemicals, no refined oil/food, no processed foods, no additives, no bleach and no food colourings policy (the only concession is the imported deli meats).
The interiors are modern and easy on the eye, the inside section boasts a huge open kitchen and lots of display counters and a huge blackboard introducing patrons to the ingredient list. A sprig of fresh flowers on every table and little highlights of blue everywhere add to the brightness of the space. The outdoors is spacious and covered with an awning, there are low and high table options in this area.

Owners Zarina and Girish Monie have worked on this project along with Chef Ubeid for the past two years, perfecting recipes and methods using their stringent ingredient list, and creating low GI (glycemic index) foods that are full of nutrients, good fats and good carbs. They use seeds, nuts, superfoods, high fibre and lots of fruits and vegetables in their foods. Sorted. Delicatessen also stocks and serves Nudo Pizzeria al naturale pizzas with gluten-free guilt-free crusts like almond, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth and water chestnut, cauliflower and whey protein.

The menu is unique with every dish described in detail including a macronutrient count. Calories, fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fibres and net carbs are all measured and mentioned for all products and dishes. It is pretty extensive, with a breakfast selection where quinoa and super seed mixes replace oats and corn/wheat flakes, eggs of all kinds are served with primal toast; coconut pancakes, almond waffles and single origin coffees all vie for the morning meal. The sandwiches and wraps are customisable with interesting breads and wrap options. The wraps are made of vegetables with chia and flax seeds or then buckwheat or quinoa. Eggplant & Roasted Peppers with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and Feta was delicious in a beetroot, chia and flaxseed wrap; Gyro Lamb Wrap with lettuce, grilled onion, hummus and Feta in a cauliflower and moringa wrap or even a classic indulgence of a grilled ham and cheese in buckwheat bread. Salads are totally customisable with a make-your-own-salad option with toppings, dressings and proteins. The Asian Steak Salad, Coastal Cobb Salad (keto) and the I am Groot (veg) were excellent.

With a selection of soups and mains such as Spaghetti with Meatballs, Linguine Alla Carbonara, Meat Burger, Sorted. Butter Chicken with Buckwheat Paratha, Air-fried Fish & Chips, this place has you 'Sorted' without you feeling like you are on a ëdietí or any kind of deprivation. The desserts have no refined sugar and no grains either so cheesecakes are on almond or coconut bases sweetened with forest honey or pure maple syurp or any of the other natural sweeteners used. Tiramisu is excellent and the Mango Cheesecake with no added sweetener, divine.
The huge displays showcase in-house deli products, which range from pastries, dessert jars and cookies to breads, wraps, bases and condiments such as tomato ketchup, hot sauce, mayonnaise, all made fresh at the outlet. Short shelf lives, fresh products made with good-for-you superfoods and ingredients are the norm here.
