Dishy Delhi
Rupali Dean
Delhi is often associated with street food and dhabas, and Mughlai cuisine rich in flavour. But there’s much more. UpperCrust goes deep into the heart of the capital to bring you 10 establishments dishing out the best, for 25 years and more
Delhi’s culinary scene has blossomed into a thrilling food haven over the past 25 years, turning the city into a gastronomic adventure as diverse as its people. In the 1990s, the food landscape was pretty traditional, mostly dominated by hearty Mughlai fare and classic North Indian dhabas – think rich biryanis and buttery naan. It was all about comforting homestyle cooking, often enjoyed while perched on plastic chairs at roadside stalls. Fast forward to the late '90s and 2000s, and things began to sizzle! As globalisation hit, a wave of international flavours rolled into the city. Suddenly, you could find tantalising sushi, creamy pastas, and spicy tacos elbowing their way onto Delhi's plates. Fine-dining restaurants popped up, showcasing chefs who were not afraid to experiment. Imagine having an elegant meal that weaves together Indian spices with Italian flair. A food lover’s paradise!
A visit to Delhi would be incomplete without savouring the renowned butter chicken, a dish that embodies the essence of the city’s culinary legacy. The charm of casual dining spots offers a perfect backdrop for this and other good food without breaking the bank. You can enjoy a satisfying meal that caters to every palate, typically affordable for two. For a sweet finish, Delhi’s rich dessert culture is highlighted by the irresistible allure of syrup-soaked jalebis, best enjoyed fresh and warm, alongside delectable variations of kulfi bursting with flavour.
Street food has also enjoyed a mini-revolution, with bustling vendors serving lip-smacking delights that range from crispy, flaky pastries to hearty, spicy chole bhature, immersing diners in authentic local flavours. Think about it: the iconic golgappa now has gourmet versions, while classic chaat stalls have sprouted trendy variations.
The charm of street food is undeniable, but a true taste of Delhi requires a visit to its legendary restaurants, where history and gastronomy intersect. One such gem is Shyam Sweets, established in 1910 in Old Delhi. While their savoury samosas and Indian sweets are must-tries, the star is undoubtedly the kachoris, stuffed with peas, served hot alongside a tangy potato curry, delivering a burst of flavours. Legend has it that their popularity was ignited by a suggestion from Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, transforming them into a local favourite. Equally celebrated is Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale, serving up the finest kulfi in Delhi since 1906. From its beginnings as a humble milk vendor, this beloved establishment is now run by the fourth generation of kulfi artisans. Their fruit kulfis, crafted from fresh pulp, offer a refreshing escape with delightful varieties like orange, mango, pomegranate, and apple.
From the fragrant aromas of Mughlai and North Indian dishes to the excitement of global flavours, Delhi’s dining landscape has slowly conjured a delightful fusion. Traditional eateries keep the spirit alive with offerings such as rolls and kebabs that have become staples of everyday indulgence. Street-side stalls serving spicy chaats and modern interpretations entice curious palates, inviting adventurous food lovers to explore an ever-evolving menu. As urban centres like Connaught Place thrive, they blend old-world charm with vibrant modernity, creating an electric atmosphere filled with upscale boutiques, trendy cafés and historic dining spots. This bustling hub draws in locals and tourists alike, eager to sample the culinary diversity on offer. Beyond the well-known chains, the city brims with hidden gems where authentic experiences await. Picture sipping a rich South Indian filter coffee in a cosy café that has been an institution since the mid-20th century, while savouring delicious regional delicacies.
As modern cafés and bistros spring up alongside classic eateries, the dining experience in Delhi has become a playful fusion of old and new. And health-conscious diners are no longer left out, with a surge in cafés focusing on organic, plant-based menus. The rise of food delivery apps has made it easier to explore culinary delights without stepping out of your PJs – whether you’re craving momos or artisan pizza.
Delhi’s dining scene today is a celebration of flavours, an artistic exploration where every meal is an opportunity to engage with both the city’s rich heritage and its dynamic future. With each bite, you experience the passion and creativity of a metropolis that is as diverse as it is delicious.
Over the past 25 years, the food scene has evolved into a vibrant tapestry, seamlessly blending rich traditions with innovative culinary experiences. The city remains anchored by iconic establishments that offer a delightful mix of nostalgia and modern gastronomy.

Karim’s
Karim’s of Old Delhi is a landmark, representing the rich heritage of Indian cuisine. Starting as a humble roadside stall, it has blossomed into a global name, beloved by food enthusiasts craving an authentic historical experience. Mohammed Aziz, a cook in the royal court of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, fled Delhi after the emperor's exile, first settling in Meerut and later Ghaziabad. His son, Haji Karimuddin, returned to Delhi in 1911 during King George V’s coronation with an innovative idea: opening a dhaba featuring Mughal classics to cater to the influx of visitors. Initially, he offered just two dishes – Alu Gosht and dal with rumali roti. By 1913, he established Karim Hotel near Jama Masjid, the original outlet until the 1990s. After Haji Karimuddin's passing in January 2018, Zain Saab, his great-grandson, now oversees the legacy, ensuring the authentic taste remains.
For over a century, this gem has preserved Mughlai culinary traditions, influenced by Persian, Turkish and Indian flavours, characterised by rich spices and perfectly cooked meats. Karim’s warmly welcomes both nostalgic locals and adventurous tourists, offering a unique dining experience. A meal here, paired with a refreshing glass of Mohabbat ka Sharbat, perfectly encapsulates my culinary dreams and celebrates its unmatched legacy. To reach Karim’s, disembark at Jama Masjid metro station, exit at gate 4, walk left. Be sure to try the Nayaab Brain Curry, Mutton Biryani and Seekh Kebabs.
