RockSalt is award-winning Chef Abhijit Saha's most recent venture. The downtown restaurant occupies a high-ceilinged space that lets the outdoors in with its mostly wood interiors and vertical greenery. Jars of multi-coloured ingredients light up the bar. You can relax on sofas scattered with floral-printed cushions or choose the high tables.
Chef Abhijit Saha has, over the years, been working with Indian food, bringing to it his penchant for experimenting and his skill for Instagram-ready presentation. Modern Indian is one of the highlights of the RockSalt menu and be assured you'll be clicking away as every plate arrives. The appetiser menu takes familiar Indian favourites and gives them a modern touch with unusual ingredients and edgy plating. Stuffed paniyaram, the unpretentious South Indian snack, gets chic treatment here. It comes stuffed with masala and is served with a vibrant beetroot chutney. Another signature starter is the Baked Chicken Samosa, an attractive set-up of six mini samosas sitting atop shot glasses holding yogurt, imli chutney and green chutney foam.
Main courses include modern dishes as well as the conventional. You could order the Bengali Style Fish Curry, which packs a good mustard kick and comes topped with straw potatoes. Combined with plain rice it makes a comforting meal. Or, go for the Hyderabadi mutton biryani which is fragrant and spicy, another satisfying dish. For dessert, there's the much-photographed Gulab Jamun Inspired Cheesecake, served with poached pears and macaron and a lovely Rajbhog-flavoured ice cream.
RockSalt is the perfect spot for an evening of drinks and the bar shakes up desi-inflected cocktails flavoured with everything from curry leaf to kokum and cinnamon.
