Restaurants that Stand the Taste of Time
Whilst parsing a culinary map of the country,
the idea that had once germinated itself
years ago, to do a food trail across the oldest
eateries of the country, took root yet again.
Till that day arrives and we set foot on that
journey, all we can do is draw up a concise
list and keep it updated, and share it with
you, food lover.
Let’s start closer home, in Bombay,
where the first restaurant that comes to
mind for being among the oldest and iconic
is Britannia & Co, founded in 1923 by the
Kohinoor family. That Berry Pulao is really
unmatched elsewhere, with zereshk berries,
and mini mutton kebabs and mutton chunks,
topped with fried cashews. The pet cat at Leopold Cafe, Bombay
the counter is another signature of the Parsi
eatery we all love. Add the raspberry soda in Dorabjee & Sons, Poona
and Britannia is done.
Next up in Bombay is Leopold Cafe,
founded in 1871, by the Dasturs. It remains
one of Colaba Causeway’s icons and that of
the city’s, for its untouched European vibe,
flowing beer and multi-cuisine menu. The
Roast Chicken and the stroganoff are yum! The
chilli garlic potatoes, too. Did you know the
café was just a wholesale cooking oil store,
then a general store, a pharmacy, before it
became what it is today. The Mumbai Terror
Attacks only added to the fame of this iconic
eatery, across the world.
